One Concern’s Technical Working Group Advises Technology Platform Approach to Building Resilience Against Earthquakes and Flooding

Leading Group of Climate Experts Provides Scientific Expertise to Improve Climate Threat AI/ML Solutions and Probabilistic Modeling

MENLO PARK, Calif., April 6, 2021 — One Concern, Inc., today announced its independent Technical Working Group (TWG) is supporting the technical validation and deployment of seismic and flooding models for Resilience-as-a-Service offerings in the US and Japan. With leading climate and scientific expertise, the Technical Working Group is advising One Concern’s AI-enabled resilience solutions and disaster-risk reduction technologies to address escalating climate threats, amidst an increasing global focus to develop ESG goals that withstand disruption.

The Technical Working Group, comprised of leading academic and scientific advisors from the US and Japan, presents recommendations with model updates, approaches, validations and developments around One Concern’s platform and approach to data. The Technical Working Group also supports One Concern in analyzing local data and behavior to broaden collective knowledge while continuing to learn about differences in local data and impacts for earthquakes and floods. With counsel and model feedback from the Technical Working Group, One Concern offers Resilience-as-a-Service solutions to private and public sector organizations to safeguard against environmental threats.

“Trust in our platform, data and AI/ML technology is key to One Concern’s approach to making disasters less disastrous,” said Nicole Hu, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder at One Concern. “The Technical Working Group is essential to our mission of building long-term probabilistic modeling around natural disasters and climate change, in order to enable decision makers to safeguard their organizations and communities. With the support of the Technical Working Group, One Concern is applying data science and machine learning to address a historic environment of escalating climate and environmental threats.”

“Much has changed in the last decade — natural hazards and the resulting disasters are breaking records each year, and organizations must face increasing climate risk as a top priority,” said Craig Fugate, Chief Emergency Management Officer at One Concern and former FEMA Administrator. “Our top global concern should be protecting our communities and making the right investment decisions that increase resilience. To achieve this future, we must eliminate blind spots around natural hazards and risk, and the Technical Working Group brings scientific rigor and independent validation in order to help uncover, prepare for, and mitigate unpredictable disaster risk.”

On a continuing basis, the Technical Working Group will share key observations and conclusions regarding the efficacies of the One Concern models, including for seismic, flooding and other environmental hazards.

The Technical Working Group members include:

  • Dr. Roger Borcherdt, Scientist Emeritus, Earthquake Science Center, United States Geological Survey, has a career marked with “exceptional scientific contributions in the fields of seismology and engineering seismology, extraordinarily broad in scope” as noted on the Presidential Distinguished Service Award he received in 2010 as the highest honor of the U.S. Department of Interior.
  • Dr. Jeremy Bricker, Associate Prof., Hydraulic Engineering at TU Delft, and Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, is a hydraulic and coastal engineer focused on the application of fluid mechanics to engineering design.
  • Dr. Gregory G. Deierlein, Director, John A. Blume Earthquake Engineering Center, Stanford University, has transformative research which has influenced the development of national codes and guidelines related to stability and collapse of buildings and other structures.
  • Dr. Nobuhito Mori, Professor, Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University, has areas of interest including air-sea interface physics, climate change, the dynamics of wind waves, long waves and tsunamis.
  • Dr. Y. Joseph Zhang, Research Professor, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, has research interests in theoretical and computational geophysical fluid mechanics, nonlinear wave mechanics, complex 3D environmental flows and numerical methods.

“As members of the Technical Working Group, we ensure scientific oversight and rigor in our recommended approach to One Concern in order to minimize biases in the resilience product,” said Dr. Y. Joseph Zhang, Research Professor, Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

“The Technical Working Group strives to ensure that 1C applies models correctly and within the range of validity of each model’s fundamental assumptions, and evaluates 1C’s proposed approaches against the state of the art for computer aided engineering,” said Dr. Jeremy Bricker, Associate Prof., Hydraulic Engineering at TU Delft, and Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

“One Concern’s development of river and coastal flood models is a challenging and fascinating project, as the assessment of compound hazards is of global importance. These types of global challenges are outlined in the United Nation Sendai Framework, IPCC: Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and the One Concern models are a response to this,” said Dr. Nobuhito Mori, Professor, Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University. “As a member of One Concern’s Technical Working Group I am advising the flood model development and guide to the world-leading model.”
